Lechwe Primary School is part of Lechwe School, and educates 3-11 year olds, serving the local and expatriate community of Kitwe and surrounding areas. The school accommodates up to 50 places in each age group from Reception (start of statutory school age) to Year 6 (final primary year before transfer to high school), organized into 2 classes of up to 25 children.
Our school is a fantastic place to learn, achieve and thrive. With excellent teaching and an engaging curriculum we are committed to helping every child excel and reach their full potential both academically and socially
We are proud of our school environment with its adequate facilities, superb resources and happy, purposeful atmosphere. Outside, our surrounding area enables children to take part in a wide range of sports and play with friends. Excellence in PE, sports, computing, the arts and science are particular strengths of the school.
Our Values-based philosophy underpins the way that we work, instilling our children with core values, including honesty, co-operation, tolerance, love, respect, determination and happiness. This combined with our wonderful facilities and safe, nurturing environment, enables our children to enjoy their learning, achieve excellent results and develop the confidence to succeed.
We welcome all children, no matter what their individual needs. We endeavor to include them with additional support in all areas of the curriculum. We aim for every child to make progress whatever their starting point or background.
The Nursery Programme is offered to children ages 2.6 - 4. English is taught to these children in a playful manner, including rhymes, songs, games, story-telling, etc in a friendly, informal and encouraging atmosphere. Teachers should lovingly stimulate the talents and interests of the youngest learners and teach them the English language and pre-school concepts and skills.
Our pre-school curriculum should provide stimulating activities for the development of language skills, math and logical skills, gross motor and fine motor skills, social skills and musical skills. At this level the use of worksheets and other time wasting strategies is strongly discouraged!
In addition to a stimulating classroom environment, children are offered a secure and friendly school playground incorporating sensopathic centres and opportunities for gross motor development.
The preparation class provides a more structured instruction in preparatory reading and writing skills, early numeracy skills, science and social studies, preparing the young learners for entering the first grade. This year serves as an ideal transition between the pre-school and elementary school years. Again the use of formal worksheets and passive activities is strongly discouraged!
As a part of their curriculum, these young learners also participate in physical education, music, arts and drama classes.
The Key Stage 1 (KS1) and Key Stage 2 (KS2) sections follow the National Curriculum of England and Wales. This curriculum has been adapted to the Zambian context and gives the teacher freedom to make alterations when necessary.
The curriculum of the Primary School includes Numeracy (Mathematics), Science, Literacy (English), French, PSHE, History, Geography, Science, Music, Art and Crafts, Physical Education, and Information Technology.
The curriculum of the Primary School includes Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). Subjects include: Numeracy, Science and Literacy.
The school follows the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and Cambridge Primary Syllabus (CPS) in the primary school and the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC) and Cambridge Assessment International Education syllabus for the secondary section both of which take our locality into account. The World renowned and respected GL Assessment at CAT 4 level are regularly conducted. Lechwe School is a proud center of SAT, ABRSM, and IELTS examinations.
